History
We have come a long way from Lead Based Paints, with all companies mentioned earlier with interior
painting, and exterior painting,
having a much greener line, all being a waterborne latex paint, with low to zero V.O.C's (volatile odor
content). Using the earth's natural minerals and compounds, now more Eco Friendly paints, we have come a
full circle from 47 years ago. Lead Paints being totally phased out in 1962, which was the smartest thing
our manufactures could have done, environmentally speaking. Graduating back in 2005, having our Lead Based
Paint Abatement Certification for contractors and supervisors from the University of Cincinnati ; we can
provide assistance to older homes and decks and siding painted
prior to 1962 in Colorado. Lead Paint Abatement, or Paint Abatement mean total removal of Lead Paint. While
EPA standards are very high, states that do not receive federal funded money, have quality standards reaching
much higher than the EPA, safeguarding those in contact.
Another Choice to Paint Abatement
Another avenue or alternative other than paint abatement are encapsulations. Lead Encapsulating
paints provide complete covering and isolation of Lead, protecting the general public from that point on.
Encapsulate Paints tend to be priced higher than general latex paint, but offers a savings from the total
removal and proper hazardous disposal costs, not to mention protection. For the common home that has lead,
an encapsulate paint is probably the way to go, costing on average twice what it would normally. While Paint
Abatement generally cost on average 10 times the normal house painting cost, this procedure is done for very
historic structures, persevering moldings, cornices, and dental work that many homes of that era contained,
wishing to keep as original as possible.
While the danger to an adult is minimal, coming in contact with Lead Paint, the EPA set
standards for all states to abide by, protecting the children, whom especially have the thumb to mouth syndrome.
If a little one should happen to pick up a small Lead Based Paint chip and ingest it, that what follows would
be a detriment for life for the ability to learn, speak, and interact. However, if Lead Paint was suspended
with an encapsulate paint product, little to no harm would come to child ingesting. Colorado has very little
Lead Based Paint compared to the Eastern States, which is the reason for the ban in the first place, back
in the early 60's.
Two Possibilities to Remediate Lead Paint
If you think you may have lead paint, there is either 2 avenues to take. One, owner of property
perform the work by his self, and still must despose of Lead waste in special hazardous waste containers,
or hire a contractor who is licensed to perform the Lead Paint Abatement or Encapsulation to Colorado's State
standards.
At Eco Paint Specialist's, we take great strides and care for safety, having a Health and
Safety Work Plan in place, whom all review and sign on a regular monthly safety meeting. All officers hold
either a 40 hr. or 10hr. OSHA safety certificate, with employee safety at Eco Paint's primary concern. Denver's
Leading authority conducting Lead Paint Abatement, and Paint Encapsulations.
All workers who work on one particular Lead location more than 6 months, must have blood
test before work begins, and every 6 months until project is completed. Contractor must keep test results
on file for 40 years, or pass results on to EPA for record keeping. Encapsulating substrates using an approved
encapsulate paint does not fall into this record keeping, unless lead chips are removed, by scraping or sanding,
becoming airborne.
